Ex-Syracuse star Eric Devendorf defends Jim Boeheim: ‘He has earned the right to step down when he wants’

Syracuse basketball is 16-11 this season and on the verge of missing the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season. Despite Syracuses’ recent struggles under Jim Boeheim, former Orange star Eric Devendorf says the 78-year-old head coach has earned the right to retire on his own terms.

“The fans love Coach Boeheim, but I guess they’ve been calling for him to retire for the past few years,” Devendorf said Wednesday, via College Sports on SiriusXM. “Once you get past that 75 mark its time for you to sit down because you want to see another guy get an opportunity and a chance to lead. But at the same time, the guy has been there for 50-plus years, he’s been incredible and he’s been a Hall of Famer. I believe he has earned the right to step down when he wants, whenever that is. I guess no one really knows right now.”
